Robert Frederick "Rick" Mobbs Jr. was born in Pinehurst, NC, on February 28, 1951. Rick's art, laughter and open heart touched many people. Following an adventurous youth, Rick studied at the Vesper George School of Illustration and Design and the Museum School, in Boston, MA and received a BS in Art Therapy from Lesley College in Cambridge, Mass. He trained in the studio of Robert Cormier, the Director of the Guild of Boston Artists and studied in the MFA Studio Arts program at Eastern Carolina University in Greenville, NC. In 2006, he moved to Montezuma, New Mexico. For eight years, he lived with his family on the campus of UWC-USA and enjoyed the vibrant community there before moving to Santa Fe in 2014. Rick passed away at home under care of hospice on Wednesday, October 5, 2016. He had cholangiocarcinoma, a rare form of bile duct cancer.

A long time union member of IATSE in North Carolina and New Mexico, Rick worked as the head painter, lead scenic artist or crew member for more than 80 films. He also worked as an art director, production illustrator, storyboard artist or sculptor on many other feature films, TV movies, pilots, episodes and commercials. He helped found a number of arts cooperatives and events, and developed a rich virtual community of artistic exchange. Rick was also deeply connected to the work of sobriety and recovery. Rick's partner in life and heart Naomi, sisters Betty, Alice, Melanie and Stephanie, children Jason, Broadus, Ada and Calliope, grandchildren Will and Sabine, goddaughter Fernanda and many nieces and nephews celebrate his memory. Rick was an engaged and joyous father, embracing play and creativity with each of his children.
